Overview

Planning to study in Australia and apply for work opportunities over there? Then here is a great news for you’ll!  The Australian government has extended the duration of post-study work permit for international students.

International higher education graduates in Australia who meet the prerequisites will receive an additional two years of post-study work rights on their Temporary Graduate Visa (subclass 485) beginning on July 1, 2023. Apart from this, the duration of part-time jobs has also been increased.

This information has been received following the bilateral agreement between Australia and India, where it was decided to open 3,000 spaces in the Mobility Arrangement for Talented Early Professionals (MATES). The Australian government has taken this decision to fulfil the shortage of skilled labours in the country.

Since post-study work helps international students to gain work experience in top-notch companies and extend their career opportunities, every student planning to study abroad considers the post-study work permit available in each country. Thus, this post-study work permit in Australia makes it a lucrative destination for international students planning to study abroad.

Now, with the extension of a post-study work permit, international students can work for up to 8 years in Australia, depending on their program, after completing their education at a recognised educational institution.

What is Visa Subclass 485?

Visa subclass 485, also known as the Temporary Graduate visa, is a temporary visa issued by the Australian government that allows international students who have recently completed their studies at an Australian educational institution to stay and work in the country temporarily.

This visa has two streams: the Graduate Work Stream, which is for students with skills and qualifications relevant to occupation on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL), and the Post-study Work Stream, which is for students who have completed a higher education degree in Australia and grants them additional time to work and gain practical experience.

Visa subclass 485 provides an opportunity for international graduates to gain valuable work experience, enhance their skills, and potentially qualify for permanent residency in Australia.

Benefits of Post-Study Work Permit in Australia

Here are some advantages for international students due to post-study work permits in Australia:

  • The extension of post-study work permits allows international students to gain valuable work experience in Australia for a longer time, which can enhance their employability and professional skills. This experience can be a significant advantage when seeking employment in their home country or elsewhere internationally.

  • With a work permit, international students can financially support themselves during their stay in Australia. This can ease the financial burden on their families back home and help cover living expenses, accommodation, and other costs.

  • While working in Australia, international students have the opportunity to expand their professional network. Building connections with local employers and colleagues may open doors to future job opportunities or even potential sponsorship for permanent residency.

  • For some students, the post-study work visa of Australia can serve as a pathway to permanent residency in the country. Certain visas and immigration pathways are linked to skilled work experience, and the work experience gained during the post-study work permit can be valuable for meeting eligibility criteria.

  • Living and working in a foreign country can be an enriching experience, allowing students to immerse themselves in Australian culture and society. This exposure to different cultures can broaden their perspectives and contribute to personal growth.

  • For international students who have invested time and money in their education, the post-study work permit allows them to make the most of their educational experience and gain a return on their investment.

  • Working in Australia provides international students with the opportunity to adapt to Australian work practices and norms, making it easier to transition to a long-term career in the country if they choose to do so
