Overview

Going for an overseas study and gaining knowledge at a global platform is one of the most effective paths of self-enlightenment. Among all the countries, the UK being the most eligible country to study has always been the choice of students in every way.

UK - the Queen’s land is a land of knowledge and a sea of opportunities. Living and studying in the UK is an experience to be taken once in a lifetime. The best part of living in the UK is that it is comparatively inexpensive and comfortable for a student coming from different backgrounds and countries.

Let’s see here how is it to live and study in the UK?

To live in the UK, you need to shell out approximately 1,131 GBP per month, which sums up to 9,207 for 9 months if you plan to live outside London. However, when we think of London – the capital city of the United Kingdom then expenses to be taken into consideration are 1,334 GBP per month and for 9 months, the total expense would be 12,006 GBP 9 months. These amounts include the entire living cost; to be precise it includes accommodation, food, travel, and daily personal expenses. The amounts are always mentioned for 9 months and that is surprising, right!

But the reason is in the UK students have 2 long breaks during their academic year which are Summer (July to September) and Winter (December) breaks, 2 months and one month respectively hence the actual stay is for 9 months in a year. The summer break is for 2 months as students are allowed to do summer jobs.

The next big tasks for you will be where to live and how to find accommodation. Remember the accommodation you choose is going to be your home for the next 1 or 2 years hence the “feel at home” environment is necessary. Various trusted websites provide you with information about private accommodation, scroll, check and book. Some of the trusted websites are – right move student, Unite student, studentpad.co.uk, and amber. The average accommodation rent is usually 150 GBP per week.

The best option anytime and always is to book through university and stay in on-campus accommodation, Most of the universities provide university accommodation which is in the university campus, it is cheaper and students friendly for international students. Universities provide accommodation on a first come first serve basis hence it is best to start your search in advance and be ready when the universities open up. You need to pay a deposit somewhere between 150 to 500 GBP.

During your stay for education purposes to survive in the UK, it is advisable to work part-time while you are studying which will allow you to shell out some money for your personal use and to have some fun time, you cannot be completely dependent on your family members or sponsor. Most of the universities allow you to work part-time up to 20 hours maximum per week during the term – time without hampering your academic schedule. The jobs that you can take up are survival jobs, which means you, do them only to survive through your monetary expenses.

You can work on different job roles mainly as a Sales assistant, Pharmacy Delivery Driver, Pizza Delivery Driver, Gardener, Customer Assistant, Waitress, Receptionist, Ice Cream scooper, Smoothie Maker, Bartender, Waitress at the university cafeteria, Babysitter, etc. You can get paid somewhere between 7 GBP to 12 GBP per hour.
