Speaking is an art form that requires focus and involves more than just displaying one's large vocabulary. You can demonstrate your language skills and express yourself freely in the cue card component of the IELTS speaking test. If the idea of speaking for two minutes straight makes you nervous, don't worry!

This blog's objective is to assist readers in comprehending the nuances of answering the standard IELTS speaking cue card question, "Describe a Live Sports match that you have watched." The choice of this topic allows test-takers to demonstrate their language proficiency while highlighting their personal stories.

Describe a Live Sports Match that you have watched cue card - sample answer 1

Introduction

Many sports fans attend games in person despite the high prices set by stadium owners. To be completely honest, though, I've never had the chance to see a single game in a stadium. This is simply because I don’t find it worth it to pay such high prices just to watch one single match. However, there was one exceptional occasion when I got to experience a live match.

What was it?

I'm a huge basketball fan and was fortunate enough to attend a game in a stadium once. That is, it happened one day as I was randomly scrolling social media, and a post appeared, prompting users to guess answers.

I happened to know the solution and commented. By chance, they replied to my comment, which was the correct answer, and I won the contest. To my surprise, I won two tickets to the latest basketball game in town as a prize.

When did you watch it?

Approximately 10 days after answering that question, I watched the match with my cousin, a basketball enthusiast. We dressed and headed to the stadium to enjoy the match and have the time of our lives. It was simply an amazing experience.

What was it like?

The stadium was almost full of basketball fans. The majority of the people in the stadium were young people or university students. They were all very energetic and thrilled, giving their teams their full support. As the game started, the crowd erupted in cheers and chants, adding to the electric atmosphere.

And how did you feel about it?

I was watching the game unfold before my eyes was exhilarating. I will always remember that surreal experience I had in the stadium. All of this was due to that social media post, which gave me the incredible chance to have such a life-altering event.

Conclusion

The memories of that match will forever hold a special place in my heart.

Describe a Live Sports Match that you have watched cue card - sample answer 2

Introduction

Sports hold significant importance in people's lives, drawing more individuals to engage in indoor and outdoor games. While playing sports is enjoyable, witnessing live sporting events also brings immense pleasure. As a passionate sports enthusiast, I adore football, with Ronaldo as my favourite player. I make it a point to watch every televised game of his.

What was it? / When did you watch it?

But here I would like to talk about a football match organised by the local government last year to encourage young adults to play. Despite being a crucial member of the team, I couldn't participate due to an injury.

What was it like?

Although I couldn't play the match due to my injury, I decided to go at least and watch it. Initially, I was sceptical about whether I would be able to enjoy the match. But as the match began, the audience started cheering up, and the scenario of the game continued to change until the end, which kept me interested. Both sides played with discipline, commitment, and resolve throughout the game. In the end, our squad prevailed by a single goal.

And how did you feel about it?

What struck me most was witnessing players from both teams embracing each other, showcasing positivity and sportsmanship. In the end, prizes were awarded to the top performers and the players who did well during the prize distribution event.

Conclusion

Overall, the experience was unlike any other, offering a unique perspective from my usual routine of playing.

Describe a Live Sports Match that you have watched cue card - sample answer 3

Introduction

From a young age, I've been crazy about sports, especially cricket. My absolute favourite was Lasith Malinga, the cricket star. I remember how thrilled I used to get whenever he stepped onto the field to bowl. Over the years, I've been lucky enough to attend several matches with my family and friends, but one game stands out the most.

What was it?

It was a cricket showdown at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium. This match was special because it marked Lasith Malinga's farewell as a bowler.

When did you watch it?

I remember it was during the 2020 Asia Cup. I was in the 11th grade back then, and I was so keen on seeing this match live that I convinced my dad to take me all the way to Mumbai just for this event.

What was it like?

The crowd's constant applause increased the intensity of the game. In the middle of the game, I ran into a group of people my age. During the match, I bumped into a group of friends my age, and together, we laughed, cheered, and enjoyed every moment. As the day turned into night, the floodlights lit up the stadium, and the whole crowd erupted with enthusiasm.

And how did you feel about it?

The experience was enriching for me emotionally. Finally, getting to see Lasith Malinga play live was a dream come true, but knowing that it was his last match left me feeling bittersweet. That day taught me a valuable lesson that nothing in this world is permanent. That day marked the end of Lasith Malinga's 28-year career as an international cricket player. It also made me realise the importance of embracing change.

Conclusion

Being there in person and witnessing the game unfold right before my eyes made it an unforgettable experience. It's a memory I'll cherish forever, far better than watching it on TV.

IELTS speaking part 3 - Follow-Up Questions

Question: Why do some individuals enjoy watching live sports?

Answer: People can witness the performance of their favourite sports star up close and get the opportunity to take selfies and autographs with them while they watch live sports, which adds to the experience. Apart from this, they also get to interact with other spectators who have come to support the players.

Question: Do you prefer watching sports live or on television?

Answer: While some individuals enjoy the excitement of live events, others would rather watch them on television from the comfort of their own homes. I think it's more affordable and convenient to see your favourite sport on TV than to watch it live at a stadium. I can watch a lot of action replays on television.

Question: Do you believe that competition benefits students?

Answer: For students, competition is beneficial because it brings out the best in them. They prepare and perform when they compete. They may need to use fresh approaches and methods to defeat the opposition. The most important thing students gain is the ability to work with discipline, commitment, and determination. Consequently, children's lives undergo a paradigm shift as a result of healthy competition.

Question: What types of sports do Indians enjoy watching?

Answer: Most Indians used to watch live cricket matches in the past. The crowds for other sports were rather small. On the other hand, live broadcasts of a wide range of sports, such as basketball, tennis, football, hockey, and so on, have become popular with Indians. Additionally, certain sports that were in danger of going extinct have been revived due to this massive upheaval. The best example of this is Kabaddi, which has gained popularity again thanks to a league.

Question: Do you consider sports to be a viable career option for students?

Answer: Yes, sports is a viable career option, given the expansion of the sports industry. Nevertheless, I think it takes a lot of work for people to stay mentally and physically fit. If they want to succeed in that field, they need the right kind of guidance.

Conclusion
