What the GRE Test is?

The GRE short for the Graduate Record Examination is a graduate school entrance exam that influences admissions decisions. The GRE Exam is designed to evaluate and analyse critical thinking abilities across different disciplines.

This Test is a regulated test devised and administered by the Educational Testing Service, or ETS, to determine a student's overall intellectual readiness for graduate school entry. Along with GRE, ETS provides a variety of additional standardised and evaluation examinations, including English Language Proficiency Tests such as the TOEFL. ETS is also affiliated with certain boards, which administer the SAT.

Through the GRE General Test, a candidate is evaluated on his quantitative ability, analytical writing, and verbal reasoning skills. The GRE Subject Test evaluates the ability of the candidate on a particular subject. Candidates should take a note that the GRE Subject Examinations cover just the following subject areas:

1. Chemistry,

2. Mathematics,

3. Physics

4. Psychology.

The GRE is formulated to test your knowledge of skills required for getting entry in graduate or business schools. The 3 hours and 45 minutes long test cover six - sections to assess the numeric thinking, analytical writing, and verbal reasoning skills of the candidate. Regardless of whether you keep or cancel your score, you can take the GRE only five times within a 12-month timeframe, and you must also wait at least 21 days in between testing dates.

The GRE is offered in both computer-based and paper modes (outside the United States where computer testing centres are not available). Students can register to take the computer-based test on most weekdays and choose both the date and hour of their appointment. Many times, Universities ask the student to submit the GRE Score directly to the University. In that case, ETS provides you the option to get control over who sees your score.

The option to automatically submit your score report to up to four colleges is included in your registration price. In case additional score reports are needed, it can be requested for $25 per recipient. According to the official ETS GRE website, Various Institutions, Business Schools, Law Schools, and Fellowship Sponsors around the world accept the GRE scores.

Candidates looking to appear for the GRE are required to pay the GRE fee of US $213. Candidates who are opting to appear for the GRE Subject Test are required to submit a Fee of US $150. GRE scores remain valid for five years following your test date.

Growing Importance of GRE

Apart from being one of the most commonly accepted exams by universities for admission to graduate programs, students opting to pursue doctorate degrees are also required to appear for the GRE General Test GRE as part of the university admission process.

Not only this, there has been a growing trend of business schools accepting GRE scores instead of the GMAT exam. There are also a growing number of law schools in the U.S. that accept the GRE as an alternative to the LSAT, the traditional law school entrance exam.

But today, let's relax since this blog will provide you with some excellent news and information about universities that are accepting candidates for their Technical Master's Programs without the GRE Test for the next Spring (January) Intake.

Some Universities are waiving the GRE Requirement by attaching certain conditions like accepting Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Professional Engineers (PE) certification instead of GRE (e.g. University of South Florida) or Certain Universities are demanding that they would get the students exempt from taking the GRE if they have earned a degree from an ABET-accredited program from the U.S. or overseas institution; and if they’re fulfilling the minimum GPA requirement for admission.

Students who do not meet these requirements are required to provide GRE scores (e.g. Arizona State University and The University of Cincinnati).
