History of Russell Group Universities UK

In 1994, the vice-chancellors and principals of 17 prestigious universities, including big names like Birmingham, Leeds, Liverpool, and Imperial College, gathered at the Russell Hotel (now Kimpton Fitzroy London Hotel) to talk about the future of higher education in the UK. Inspired by the hotel's name, they dubbed themselves the Russell Group Universities

The main agenda was securing funds for these top-notch universities. The founders aimed to provide the best conditions for these institutions to shine in research and teaching and impact society, the economy, and culture

Their brainstorming resulted in a solid plan to manage and fund these universities, and that's when the Russell Group Universities started to grow. Cardiff University and King’s College London joined in 1998, followed by Queen’s University Belfast in November 2006. The family kept expanding, welcoming four more universities – Durham, Exeter, Queen Mary University of London, and York – in March 2012. It's like a success story where more schools and students became part of this smart and influential community.
