SED delves into real-life projects spanning a broad range of geographic locations, climates, building types and urban morphologies, targeting the creation of carbon neutral futures and promoting inhabitant comfort, health and wellbeing. The pedagogy of the programme is research-led, evidence-based and practice-oriented.

In the creative professions today, many individuals define themselves as being at home in more than one discipline. AAIS engages with this new reality to explore alternative methods of collaboration between multiple creative professions. Through the research, design and production of a series of genre-defying spatial performances and constructions, participants examine the ways in which creative work and design overlap in the cultivation of unique project events.

The MPhil in Architecture and Urban Design (Projective Cities) is an 18-month, interdisciplinary research and design programme that examines multi-scalar questions arising at the intersection of architecture, urban design and planning. The programme is dedicated to systematic analysis, design experimentation, theoretical speculation and critical writing, all of which focus on the contemporary city.
The Landscape Urbanism (LU) programme leads to either a MArch (16 months) or a MSc (12 months) degree. It explores the role that design and designers – from architects and landscape architects to urban designers and planners – can play when confronted with the processes, landscapes and territories of planetary urbanisation (metropolitan areas, rural environments, infrastructural and productive landscapes, etc) and the environmental, racial, socio-economic and health-related crises they have triggered.
Housing and Urbanism (HU) focuses on the key contemporary issues driving urban transformation, and the role of architecture in supporting critical change. Each year, the programme addresses the most pressing issues confronting cities, which form the starting point of our studio, lecture courses and student research. While design learning and investigation form the core of our programme, a complementary aim of this work is to deepen students’ grasp of the politics and practicalities shaping the cities of today.

History and Critical Thinking (HCT) offers a unique post platform from which to investigate contemporary issues through systematic enquiry into history. At stake within the actual writing of history is a political engagement with the philosophical, social, material and environmental exigencies of the present. While the theoretical reflection on the historical is central in providing resources for the analysis of contemporary architectural and spatial thinking, specific histories remain valid as sites of investigation.
Design through making is the focus here in our woodland studio. The research we conduct demonstrates a vision for architectural education in which making (and remaking) is central to the act of design itself. The large-scale fabrication facilities on site provide a unique testing ground where we devote time to speculative research through the design of experimental prototypes and highly crafted full-scale architecture.
The Design Research Laboratory (DRL) is a 16-month, post-professional design research programme that leads to a Master of Architecture and Urbanism (MArch) degree.DRL pursues an interdisciplinary approach to design that extends beyond architecture, fostering collaboration with companies such as Ferrari, Festo, AKTII, Reider and Odico Robotics.
