TISUS stands for Test in Swedish for university or college studies in Sweden. It is an advanced exam that was created in response to demands from academic staff and students at universities. It is accepted as proof of eligibility for admission to all Swedish universities, regardless of the level of Swedish language competency.
It is meant for anyone without a Swedish language certificate who has completed upper secondary school in a foreign nation and plans to apply for academic courses in Sweden. The test is administered by the Department of Swedish Language and Multilingualism at Stockholm University.
You must fill out an online form. Malmö, Stockholm, Umeå, and Uppsala in Sweden as well as abroad, offer TISUS. Remember that in Swedish and that TISUS Sweden and TISUS elsewhere have different appearances and are available only during the application period; test dates are shown.
TISUS is a national organisation that operates out of seven cities across Sweden. We don't have any permanent test sites globally, but TISUS is conducted anywhere there is a need, and a test manager is available.
Seven universities in seven different places around the nation make up the Swedish TISUS organisation. Since there are only a certain amount of spots available at each university/test site, you can be sent to a different location when you register for TISUS. Using an online form, you register for each test location in Sweden and pay a registration fee at the same time.
TISUS is conducted in over 70 places worldwide, including all continents. Certain testing centres, primarily in the US and Europe, conduct the exam practically every scheduled time, whereas other testing centres only conduct the exam on rare occasions. We mostly employ pre-existing testing facilities, so you may be directed to a different place than what you had in mind. That is, the test is given at places where there is a need for it and where test administrators are available rather than at permanent testing centres overseas.
As such, we are unable to ensure in advance that a certain testing facility will be available. However, some testing locations provide the exam practically daily; in 2023, the following testing locations had the most applicants: Istanbul (Turkey), London (United Kingdom), San Fransisco (CA, USA), and Zürich (Switzerland).
TISUS is available twice a year, in the spring and the fall. The application deadlines are different in Sweden than elsewhere, but the test dates are the same. Remember that there are just so many seats available. A testing centre may run out of seats prior to the application deadline.
Subtests 1 and 2 (Writing) are typically held on Tuesday mornings and take roughly four hours to complete.
Note: Sub-test 3 Oral proficiency cannot be held on the same day due to time constraints. As a result, you can schedule a Tuesday or Wednesday appointment for the oral exam.
For Oral proficiency, the invitation, which is issued to you from the exam centre approximately three weeks ahead, specifies how much time you have allocated for sub-test 3.
These test dates are according to the exams that are going to be held in Sweden and according to the Sweden time.

TISUS is not a knowledge test but a proficiency test. This implies that there are no requirements to have completed a certain course or read a certain body of literature. However, you must be proficient enough in Swedish to be able to enrol in academic courses in the language.
The sample test material can help you familiarise yourself with the test. Considering the revised certification criteria in Swedish, TISUS is more challenging now than it was when the example exams were created.
You can, for example, read Swedish non fiction books and Swedish newspapers to get the extensive vocabulary required at this level. Note that the writing and speaking subtests frequently need some familiarity with Swedish society, contemporary issues, and events. By examining the sample tests, you may learn what will be evaluated and how to get ready for TISUS. The purpose of the test samples is to familiarise you with the test design.
It is crucial that you bring the following items to the examination:
a valid picture ID
pen/pencil and eraser
fee to test leader (only valid overseas).
The test results declare the course of around five weeks. You will receive an email once your marks are evaluated. Administrative authority sends the list of TISUS results to the university/college, and in that case, you do not have to submit your TISUS certificate on your own. However, if you apply late or apply from somewhere else, then you have to submit your TISUS certificate on your own.
Pass (Godkänt) and Fail (Underkänt) are the two grades.
You must pass each of the three exam sections in order to pass TISUS.
You may retake just that component (referred to as the "remaining test") if one of the components is marked as Underkänt.
The residual exam must be retaken within a year of your initial exam (that is, at one of the two scheduled test times).
If two or three of the components receive a grade of "Underkänt," the entire test will need to be retaken.
Any test centre in Sweden or any other country where TISUS exams are taken is open for residual testing (independent of where you took the first exam).
It is advised that you apply before October 15th and April 15th, respectively, for a Swedish as a foreign language (Svenska som främmande språk) course at a Swedish university or college if you are unsure if you will pass TISUS.
