NAATI Full Form

The full form of NAATI is The National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters, and is in charge of establishing and upholding strict national guidelines for language professionals in Australia. It is the only organisation that has been granted permission by each Australian state to certify interpreters and translators who want to provide their services as professionals in the language industry in Australia. They recognise language practitioners of uncommon languages and certify those practising common languages (for further details, see Types of Certification below). The organisation is active in every Australian state and territory as well as in New Zealand.

NAATI certifies people at various levels. They serve as an admission that a person is capable of meeting the standards of professionalism set by the translation and interpreting sectors. These certification levels, which range from very basic recognition to more sophisticated accreditation, are dependent on the interpreter's or translator's level of expertise. The Professional Translator certification represents the most widely accepted standard of proficiency for qualified document translators. For employment in the majority of contexts, including the legal, medical, social, financial, judiciary, and community services sectors, this degree of qualification is advised. Translator certification, as well as its essentials:

• Advanced Translator (Senior) – Formerly Level 5

• Advanced Translator – Formerly Level 4

• Certified Translator – Formerly Level 3 or Professional Translator

• Para professional Translator – Formerly Level 2, no similar Certification provided by NAATI

• Recognised Practising Translator – Formerly Translator Recognition – it is used for dialect as well as language certification and is not offered by the NAATI.

Interpreter certification and credentials:

• Conference Interpreter (Senior) – Formerly Level 5

• Conference Interpreter – Formerly Level 4

• Certified Interpreter – Formerly Level 3 or Professional Interpreter

• Certified Provisional Interpreter – Formerly Level 2 or Paraprofessional Interpreter

• Recognised Practising Translator – Formerly Interpreter Recognition – it should be used for the dialect as well as language certification and not offered by the NAATI

• Language Aid – it should be awarded for completing a NAATI test
