MAC Full Form

MAC stands for Migration Advisory Committee. It is an independent, non-departmental, non-statutory, non-time-limited public corporation that suggests the government on migration issues. The Home Office is their sponsoring department. The MAC works across government and has a UK-wide authority. It offers clear, unbiased, and fact-based recommendations.

The Home Secretary's commissions drive most of our work. For the first time, the MAC's annual report will be published alongside the commissions in 2020, followed by an increase in committee-led analysis. Considering that different groups are affected by migration in different ways, the MAC bases all of its recommendations on what it believes to be in the best interests of the local population.

The committee is supported by an approximately 20-person permanent civil service secretariat. The secretariat includes economists, social scientists, statisticians, and personnel in charge of policy and communications.

The Home Secretary forwards commissions to the MAC, and the MAC chair publishes a response to each commission. They also publish a scheduled call for evidence, during which we invite digital submissions of opinions supported by relevant data from the general public, business community, or representative organisations.

Engaging stakeholders: We arrange in-person and virtual meetings with interested parties across the United Kingdom. Their analysts do internal data collection, analysis, and modelling. They commission outside modelling if needed. The MAC has previously worked with outside specialists who assist the team in gathering evidence.

After considering all available data, they present our findings and conclusions together with policy recommendations. The report is delivered to the Home Secretary on the day of publication. Following thorough deliberation, the Home Office releases an official statement in response to our suggestions.
