HPAT Full Form

The main purpose of the Health Professions Admission Test (HPAT), also known as the Health Professions Admission Test-Ireland, is to give prospective Irish medical students an additional assessment tool. The HPAT is required of applicants to the MSc Speech and Language Therapy and MSc Occupational Therapy programs at the University of Limerick. Your secondary school grades, including your International Baccalaureate, Irish Leaving Certificate, or A-levels, are combined with your HPAT results.

The HPAT is designed to test your verbal logical reasoning, problem-solving, interpersonal, and nonverbal reasoning skills. The Australian Council for Education Research (ACER), the organization in charge of conducting the exam, asserts that the HPAT does not assess academic ability or knowledge of any specific subject. This highlights the need for you to focus on developing these skills in your preparation for the exam.

• Necessary for Medical Students

If you want to study health and medicine in Ireland, you have to score highly on the HPAT, as most Irish schools use the exam's results to determine admissions.

The three-hour HPAT-Ulster test has three sections. Sections 1 and 2 consist of multiple-choice questions, while Section 3 is a written communication.

• Section 1: Critical Reasoning

This section includes questions from the scientific, social science, and general interest areas. Three versions of the questions are available: text, tabular, and diagrammatic. The goal of this section is to assess your critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

This section has 45 questions that the student must complete within 65 minutes.

• Section 2: Interpersonal Understanding 

This section focuses on understanding and collaborating with others. It consists of narratives, questions based on different occurrences, and conversational exchanges. It assesses the behaviors and responses of people.

This section also contains 45 questions with a time duration of 55 minutes for completion.

• Section 3: Written Communication

This subsection has two tasks. The first task requires facts on social issues to be presented visually, and the second assignment is a reflective essay. It basically assesses how the ideas are created, assembled, and expressed into a significant and well-thought-out answer to the task. All activities are graded according to a strict set of assessment criteria.

This section only has 2 questions, with a duration of 60 minutes for the student to complete it.

These are the eligibility criteria for the HPAT Exam-

• You can sit for the HPAT exam if you are in your last year of school or have finished your schooling.

• You must provide your diploma or proof of completion with your application.

• You are free to submit as many applications as you wish, provided that you are a valid candidate. If you are a fifth-year student, you are not a true student.

• Only Irish citizens are eligible to take the HPAT exam since non-EU and overseas students are not permitted to do so.

• The HPAT is rated at 300 points. The highest HPAT score is often around 220 each year.

• Sadly, as ACER safeguards the formula used to calculate the score, there isn't an HPAT score calculator available.

• A maximum score of 625 is obtained by converting grades to the Irish Leaving Certificate system for the Central Applications Office. This is 6H1s on the Irish Leaving Certificate, with extra credit for advanced arithmetic. The conversion of A-Level grades to Irish Leaving Certificate points is available on the CAO website. But in the field of medicine, every five points above 550 are worth one point. This suggests that the maximum amount of points that may be obtained for medical school is 565.

• The points from academic qualifications for medical school are increased by the HPAT score. The maximum possible HPAT score is 300. Since the HPAT 2023 will take place in February, the results have not yet been made public. The highest HPAT score obtained in 2022 was 217, per ACER's year-end report.
