CAEL stand for Canadian Academic English Language. Before a student enrols in a post-secondary institution in Canada, the CAEL exam evaluates their level of English language ability. It is among the best ways to assess if a student is proficient enough in English to succeed academically.
Apart from that, the CAEL exam provides a true picture of how English is used in Canadian educational environments. In the CAEL exam, candidates read articles, respond to questions, listen to lectures and write brief essays—exactly as they would be expected to in a first-year Canadian university or college classroom.
Types of CAEL
CAEL - Online
Students in the US and Canada can take the CAEL online exam. Although students can take the exam from the convenience of their homes, they must first fulfil the necessary requirements in order to sit for it.
CAEL – At a Test Centre
Students can take the computer-based CAEL exam at the centre, which is offered on an international scale.
CAEL Format
The CAEL exam measures a test taker's aptitude and level of English language competency in a formal setting. Speaking, Reading, Writing, and Listening are the four areas in which the test taker's proficiency in the English language is evaluated.
CAEL Exam Fee
When Indian students take the CAEL exam in order to pursue academic programs in Canada, the cost is approximately $12,500 plus taxes.
How is its score Calculated?
Test takers receive individual English proficiency ratings for the areas of reading, listening, writing, and speaking in addition to an overall score. The CAEL scores are provided on a scale from 10 to 90, accompanied by explanations of the significance of each performance. The average of the four equally weighted component scores, rounded to the closest ten-point interval, constitutes the final score.

Total Test Time: The test will take about 3.5 hours to complete. The final test report provides scores for speaking, reading, writing, and listening.
CAEL Exam Integrated Skills in All the Four Parts: Candidates are expected to finish a number of activities. For the majority of these tasks, the test-taker will need to use their knowledge to respond to written and spoken questions based on what they have read or heard.
Each Test has Unscored Items: Tests are developed using unscored tasks and items in each case. These items, which have the same format as scored items, can be included in any section of the test that is not scored. There won't be a difference between unscored and scored test items for the taker.
Speaking, Reading, Writing, and Listening are divided into the following four categories:
Speaking: This section of the CAEL exam asks the test-taker to respond orally to questions displayed on the screen. It has three activities and lasts seven to ten minutes. Two speaking challenges, each based on a brief question and one speaking task based on a chart, graph, or diagram, are among the tasks.
Integrated Reading: The test-taker must read the passages and provide answers for this section of the CAEL exam. This part lasts between thirty and fifty minutes. There are two sections to this component. There are between 14 to 25 questions in the first component segment. One or two brief reading passages with comprehension questions might be found in this initial component part. One or two lengthy reading portions with comprehension questions are also included. There is just one speaking question in the second component segment, and it is based on information from a lengthy reading piece.
Integrated Listening: In this section of the test, candidates must listen to passages and respond to questions. The part lasts for thirty to forty-five minutes. There are two component portions within this component as well. The first component portion consists of 14–25 questions that are derived from one or two comprehension-based short hearing passages or one or two comprehension-based extended listening passages. One speaking question, drawn from a lengthy listening passage, is also included in the second component portion.
Academic Unit A: This section contains comprehension questions that demand a written response from the test taker. This part lasts between sixty and seventy minutes. There are three sections that make up this unit. There are roughly 11–15 questions in the first component portion, which is based on a lengthy reading text. The second component consists of a lengthy listening passage on the same subject and around 11 to 15 questions. There is one writing question in the final component section that calls for a longer written response from the test taker. Both the lengthy reading passage and the lengthy listening passage provide the content for this component portion.
Academic Unit B: This section of the test requires the taker to compose a response to comprehension questions. This section lasts between forty and forty-five minutes. There are three sections that make up this unit. One lengthy reading passage with eleven to fifteen comprehension questions can be found in the first component part. One lengthy listening piece on the same subject is included in the second component, along with eleven to fifteen comprehension questions. There is just one writing question in the last component question that calls for a brief answer from the test taker. Both the lengthy reading passage and the lengthy listening piece provide the content for this last session.
