The Institution of Westminster is a public research university in the United Kingdom's capital city of London. It was the first polytechnic in London, having opened in 1838 as the Royal Polytechnic Institution. In August 1839, the Polytechnic was granted a Royal charter, and in 1992, it became the University of Westminster. The University's motto is "Dominus fortitudo nostra," which translates to "The Lord is our Strength." The University's chancellor is Lady Frances Sorrell.
It has four campuses, three of which are located in London's central business district. Over 19,000 students from over 160 countries are enrolled in a variety of programmes ranging from undergraduate and postgraduate degrees to customised professional programmes and short courses.
Longer modules include work-based skills and interaction with practical practise, and subjects keep a strong vocational focus. Undergraduates can do research during their studies, and the university is well-known for its media studies and fashion programmes, which are both regarded as among the best in the world. Westminster, which marked its 175th anniversary in 2013, continues to spend extensively in all infrastructure, from housing to the restoration of one of Britain's original theatres on the Regent Campus.
At the University of Westminster, dedicated International Student Advisers provide information, support, and guidance to international students. A three-day residential orientation programme for new international students is offered, as well as a monthly newsletter with information on social events, intriguing news, and what's going on in London. Both a pre-sessional course and a credited module as part of a degree programme are available in English as a Foreign Language.
90% of the study was classed as "internationally exceptional" according to the 2014 Research Excellence Framework. Art and Design, Media and Communications, English, Architecture and Built Environment, and Allied Health all had good results.
The University of Westminster has four halls of residence, all of which are self-catered and have private toilets. The specialist student accommodation team can offer help and guidance on applying to university halls, as well as information on private hall choices throughout London.
International students who apply for housing before the beginning of May in the year they plan to enrol will have their applications prioritised. Even after this date, the University's accommodation office will help international students find housing and can provide further assistance and guidance to students looking for private housing.
