The University of St Andrews was established in 1413, it's situated in St Andrews, Scotland. It is the 3rd oldest university in the English-speaking Countries and Scotland's oldest. The Motto of the University is "Aien aristeuein" which means, "Ever to Excel". St Andrews encompasses the entire town rather than a designated campus, with 9,100 students from over 130 countries making up a large portion of the community.
Scottish degrees are four years lengthy, and St Andrews uses this to provide students additional flexibility. Students apply to one of four Faculties (Arts, Divinity, Medicine, or Science) and enrol in modules toward a degree, with the option to specialise in the final two years. The concept of university "parents" (third-year students) and the May Dip, in which students run into the North Sea on May Day morning, are two of St Andrews' traditions.
The University of St Andrews was selected University of the Year in the Times University Guide for 2020, and the Teaching Excellence Framework awarded the University Gold for "exemplary" teaching. Undergraduate students at St Andrews can also spend a full academic year studying abroad at a variety of locations throughout the world.
Students at the University of St Andrews can get free pre-sessional and in-sessional English language help. St Andrews has two professional International Student Advisors who can help with specific issues as well as general guidance and assistance. St Andrews is dedicated to attracting the brightest students, regardless of financial circumstances, and offers a variety of bursaries and scholarships to overseas students. These are intended to provide support and assistance to students during their time at the university.
Every undergraduate is allocated a Study Adviser with whom they must meet at the beginning of each semester to explore their options. Adviser discussions are also available at other times, and they will help the student through the complexities of the modular framework to ensure that any chosen degree pathways or options remain open.
The Times University Guide has placed St Andrews as the finest university in Scotland for the past nine years, and it was named Scottish University of the Year four times in a row from 2011 to 2015. It was selected the UK University of the Year in 2020.
According to the 2014 Research Excellence Framework, 82 percent of the research conducted at St Andrews is classified as "world-leading" or "internationally exceptional," with a minimum of 98 percent being "internationally recognised." Chemistry, physics, classics, and art history contributions all received high marks.
St Andrews guarantees an offer of housing to all undergraduate first-year students who submit their application by June 30th of the year in which they plan to enrol. There are more than 4,000 rooms available around the town, roughly 40% of which are catered, with a choice of single or shared rooms, shared or en suite bathrooms. Rather than living on a single campus, students are spread out around the city.
The residences at the University of St Andrews range from majestic stone-built listed buildings with mediaeval elements to stylish new apartments designed to high environmental and sustainability standards.
The University is located on a rocky bluff overlooking the North Sea's beautiful waters. This little, mediaeval town has a population of roughly 22,000 people, including students, and many beautiful buildings remain as testament to the thousands of years it has served as a gathering place for bishops, kings, saints, and martyrs. The University of St Andrews, which is around 80 kilometres north of Edinburgh, does not have a campus but rather encompasses the entire town.
The University of St Andrews boasts excellent facilities in a range of buildings, from the ultra-modern new Medical laboratories on our North Haugh site to the ancient magnificence of St Salvators Quadrangle, where numerous lectures are presented on a daily basis. In the previous decade, both the Students Union and the University Sports Centre have improved, with the Sports Centre undergoing a substantial £14 million refurbishment.
