Falmouth University is a fantastic place to go to school. Collaboration, ideas, innovation, and changemakers are all recognised in this space. We're exploring the promise of new technology and business, pushing boundaries, and leveraging the power of creativity with an eye to the future.

Our approach means that students start doing it right away when they arrive on college, learning the skills they'll need to work in the creative economy after graduation. All of our courses are tightly integrated with industry, so students work on real-world projects, work in industry-standard facilities, and are taught by industry experts.

History

Falmouth School of Art was founded in 1902 as a completely private company, offering workshops like Memory Drawing of Plant Form and Light & Shade. Students were charged between four and ten shillings every session for the privilege, with the option of taking Board of Education tests.

In the 1940s, the Head of Truro School of Art assumed responsibility for courses, Stanley Wright was named Principal, the School was recognised by the Ministry of Education, and ambitious expansion plans were begun. Six full-time teachers were responsible for 21 full-time students, 55 part-time day students, and 104 part-time evening students at the time. Students could choose between majoring in "Art" or "Craft." Fine art, sketching and painting, museum research, and modelling and casting in clay were all included in the definition of art. Leather, weaving, bookbinding, block printing, and wood inlay were all examples of "craft."

The National Advisory Board (NAB) threatened to close the School in 1984, claiming that its Fine Art degree programme was "academically and geographically isolated."
