Fee-paying full-time students from the United Kingdom, the European Union, and other countries are eligible for the award.
Those who apply for BA scholarships can expect to receive a First Class Honours Degree. Applicants with an upper second-class degree are welcome to apply, but they will not be given priority.
MA Scholarship applicants must have or expect to get a First Class Honours Degree or equivalent. Applicants having a master's degree from a country other than the United Kingdom must be at the top of their class, as proven by references and transcripts. Applicants with a 2.1 can apply as well, but they will not be given priority.

Applicants for a Postgraduate Taught Masters Degree must write a dissertation on a topic related to Japan. Applicants (new admissions, starting September 2021) should submit proof of this in their entrance application statement. Applicants must have (or intend to have) a first- or second-class undergraduate degree (or its equivalent in the case of non-UK candidates).
The research proposal for MPhil/PhD applicants must be focused on Japan. Applicants (new admissions, commencing September 2021) should demonstrate this in their entrance application's research project.
